The large, fast-moving mudslide that buried much of Oso, Washington in March 2014 was the deadliest landslide in U. A lidar image of the Stillaguamish River with newly calculated ages for the landslides. Since then it’s been revealed that this area has experienced major slides before, but it’s not known how long ago they occurred.

Talk about having to set boundaries with your partner. She’s the 20 World champion, as well as the 2011 Four Continents champ and 2004 World Junior champ, and she’s won the Japanese national championship three times.

She’s the first and ONLY woman in competitive ice skating who has successfully landed a quadruple jump (this happened at the 2002-03 Junior Grand Prix Final).

’ Now we can say that many of them are hundreds of years old,” said co-author Alison Duvall, a UW assistant professor of Earth and space sciences.

La Husen had not yet begun his graduate studies when he asked about studying the history of geologic activity at the Oso site.

“It suggests that the Oso landslide was not so much of an anomaly,” Duvall said.

She and La Husen are also working with the UW’s M-9 Project, which is studying hazards from magnitude-9 earthquakes along the Cascadia subduction zone.

The new study uses the radiocarbon dates for two slides to establish a roughness curve to date other events along a 3.7-mile (6-kilometer) stretch of the north fork of the Stillaguamish River.

A roughness curve uses the amount of surface erosion to establish each slide’s age.

The method shows that the slopes in the area around Oso have collapsed on average once every 500 years, and at a higher rate of about once every 140 years over the past 2,000 years.
